Current Position and Title:
Since 2001, Amilcar has been Head of the Shrimp Project, Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Camagüey , Cuba.
Education and Past Positions:
Ph.D. 2007: Biology, University of Havana, Cuba.
M.Sc. 2001: Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, University of Havana, Cuba.
B.Sc. 1997: Biochemistry, University of Havana, Cuba.
Professional Interests:
Amilcar's research project examines molecules involved in the control of growth in shrimp. He is also studying the immune system of shrimp. In another research line, he is looking for probiotics for use in shrimp culture.
Most Satisfying Achievements/Awards:
2007: National Prize at the national exposition of young researchers, for his contributions on growth stimulation of shrimps.
2006: Academy of Sciences of Cuba ( http://www.academiaciencias.cu/English/indexen.asp ) a prize, for his contributions to work on novel molecules to stimulate growth of aquatic organisms.
2005: Amilcar got a mention as a young researcher of the year in the agriculture area, granted by the Cuban Academy of Sciences of Cuba .
2005: National Prize, at the national concourse of science for young researchers, for his contribution on gene transfer in shrimps.
Family and Personal Interests/Activities:
Amilcar enjoys spending time with his family, especially with his daughters and wife. He loves the sea and he likes baseball, diving and camping.
