Professional Interests:
My research has involved a broad spectrum of marine organisms and their immune response to anthropogenic stressors and contaminants. My most relevant research is focused on the development of genomics and cellular tools to answer basic questions about marine mammal biology and their unique physiological adaptation.
Most Satisfying Achievements/Awards:
Most satisfying achievement was to go abroad to live and work for 8 years in the USA, where I was able to develop new tools for research in a new field, molecular and cellular biology of marine mammals, and being able to make it my PhD dissertation and life’s vocation.
Awards to date:
- 1996-2000: Studentship for academic excellence, University of Bologna, Italy.
- 2001- 2003: Postgraduate fellowship funded by the Italian society for Cancer research (AIRC).
- 2003-2004: Postgraduate fellowship for research training in the U.S., funded by University of Bologna, Italy.
- 2007: SC Sea Grant Consortium travel award for poster presentation at the 17th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals, Cape Town, South Africa, 2007.
- 2009: “Marco Polo” fellowship for dissertation research in the U.S, funded by the University of Bologna, Italy.
Family and Personal Interests/Activities:
Run/bike/swim and oh, any sports, really.
