Current Position and Title: Dr. Ostrander joined the Hopkins Faculty in 1996 and is currently the Associate Provost for Research and the Chair of the Graduate Board at Johns Hopkins University. He also serves as the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Education in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. He holds academic appointments in the Department of Biology in the School of Arts and Sciences and in the Department of Comparative Medicine in the School of Medicine.
In January 2005 he will assume the position of Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education at the University of Hawaii.

In 1990 he joined the Department of Zoology at Oklahoma State University as an Assistant Professor, was tenured and promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 1993. He assumed a dual role as Director of the Environmental Institute and Associate Dean of the Graduate College in 1995.
Professional Interests:
Dr. OPstrander's primary research interest has been elucidating mechanisms of chemical carcinogenesis, for which he employed aquatic, rodent and human models. A second focus of his laboratory has been on the worldwide decline of coral reef ecosystems.
Most Satisfying Achievements/Awards to Date:
Dr. Ostrander has authored over 80 technical papers and book chapters, edited 4 books, and written a field guide. He is also currently the Principal Investigator on a 2.2 million dollar grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes focused on undergraduate research and education.
He was recently elected to the Executive Committee for the member Graduate Schools of the Association of American Universities (AAU). He also serves on the Editorial Board for Aquatic Toxicology, the Advisory Board for the National Aquarium in Baltimore, and the AAU Task Force on Graduate Education.
Family and Personal Interests/Activities:
His hobbies include golf, long-distance running and underwater photography.
