Juana is currently also a Ph.D. student (Molecular Biology), enrolled at the University of Havana but doing her thesis research at the Center where she works.
Education and Past Positions:
High school graduation, 1996: Institute of Exact Sciences “Mártires de Humbolt 7”.
B.Sc. 2001: A Golden Diploma for outstanding academic achievement in Microbiology, University of Havana, Havana, Cuba.
Ph.D. (2007-2008, in progress): Doctoral studies in Biology, University of Havana, Havana, Cuba.
Advisor: Dr. Mario Pablo Estrada.
Professional Interests:
Juana is a biotechnology researcher skilled in a broad spectrum of molecular biological techniques. Since 2001, she has been conducting molecular biology studies on growth factors and the immune system in fish and crustaceans. These also encompass studies on crustacean reproduction in culture. She is using the RNA interference technique for gene silencing experiments in crustaceans.
Most Satisfying Achievements/Awards:
Juana is pleased to have been recognized twice for her research achievements by the Cuban Academy of Science (http://www.academiaciencias.cu/English/indexen.asp).
2006: for her contributions to work on a novel mechanism of RNA interference to demonstrate gene functions in aquatic organisms.
2007: for her contributions to work on neuropeptides that stimulate fish growth and the innate immune system.
Recently, Juana was named on an International patent : (WO/2007/059714) Neuropeptides for the culture of aquatic organisms .
