Current Position and Title:
Since 1975, Laida has been a professor at the Center for Marine Research, University of Havana , Cuba . Currently she is the Head of the Aquaculture Section.

She is a member of the academic staff in the Master of Science program of the Center for Marine Research, University of Havana , with responsibility for the subjects: “Culture of Aquatic Organisms” and “Physiology of Marine Organisms”.

B.Sc. 1972: Biology, University of Havana, Cuba .
M.Sc. 1994: Marine Biology and Aquaculture, University of Havana , Cuba
Ph.D. 1996:  Biology, University of Havana, Cuba . 

Professional Interests:
Laida is a well recognized specialist on shrimp maturation and reproduction. She has given many lectures and courses in several academic institutions in Latin America . She has also done some consulting for the private sector.
She has undertaken research collaborations with laboratories in Ecuador , Brazil , Mexico and France and is currently collaborating with the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology , Cuba , for research on the endocrine control of reproduction in shrimp.

Most Satisfying Achievements/Awards:
During her career Laida has obtained many awards and recognitions for her fundamental and applied research on shrimp culture. Of these the Special Distinction given by the Higher Education Ministry of Cuba was one of the most important. She also has obtained Cuban Academy of Science awards:

  • For putting in place the methodology for shrimp maturation and reproduction and thus closing of the culture cycle of the white shrimp Penaeus schmitti in Cuba.
  • For her contributions towards understanding the physiology of commercial penaeid shrimp in Cuba.
  • For her research contributions on a novel mechanism of RNA interference that is being used to demonstrate gene functions in aquatic organisms.

Laida is proud of leading the group that was recognized by the University of Havana in 2006 for achieving the research outcome having the highest economical significance: “Contribution to the introduction of the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei in Cuba ”.

Family and Personal Interests/Activities:
Laida enjoys spending time with her little family. She likes taking care of her house and garden. She also loves the warm beaches of the Caribbean.
