Microbial ecology; Natural antibacterial substances; Bacteriocins; Mutacins; Antimicrobial substances from the sea.
Marc's research activities concern the study of new natural antimicrobial agents from bacteria, cyanobacteria, yeasts, micro-algae and fungi. His team's objectives are the detection, purification, characterisation and study of the mode of action of new natural antibiotics for the perpetual struggle against undesirable microorganisms.

Patent: Marc C. Lavoie, Marilaine Mota-Meira, Gisèle LaPointe, Christophe Lacroix. 2004 Lantibiotic from Streptococcus mutans , method of production and use thereof. US Patent Bureau No. 6,699,839 B1. March 2, 2004.
Family and Personal Interests/Activities:
Marc and his wife Marilaine Mota-Meira divide their year between Canada and the tropical ambiance of the Barbados.
