Current Position and Title:
In 1996, Monica joined the NRC Institute for Marine Biosciences, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Cananda, where she is currently a Senior Research Officer.
She is also Adjunct Professor in the Oceanography and Biology Departments, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and until recently was Adjunct Associate Professor, Marine Sciences Research Center (MSRC), State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook.

Professional Interests:
Monica is an internationally recognized shellfish researcher. Within the general area of marine sciences and benthic ecology, her interests focus primarily on shellfish biology, including ecophysiology and aquaculture. Much of her research relates to the interactions between shellfish and toxin-producing phytoplankton.
Most Satisfying Achievements/Awards:
Included among her most satisfying achievements is her collaborative research on saxitoxin resistance in softshell clams, which culminated in a paper in Nature. Bricelj, V. M. , L. Connell, K. Konoki, S. P. MacQuarrie, T. Scheuer, W. A. Catterall, V. L. Trainer, 2005. Sodium channel mutation responsible for saxitoxin resistance in clams increases risk of PSP. Nature 434: 763-767.
Awards:
2003: Outstanding Achievement Award, IMB, NRC (in recognition of initiative and leadership in establishing an excellent shellfish research program at IMB).
1984: Steinberg-Squires award for the best graduate thesis (Ph.D.), MSRC, SUNYStony Brook.
1979-1984: New York Sea Grant Institute Scholarship, MSRC, SUNY Stony Brook.
1977-1981: Several Fellowships to support graduate studies.
Family and Personal Interests/Activities:
Monica enjoys travel and downhill skiing and when at home, the company of her two cats Itchy and Scratchy. She is fluent in English, French, Spanish and Slovene and has working knowledge of Italian and Portuguese.
