Professional Interests:
Sarita has a vocation to teach, which she does through a postgraduate course in Microbiology.
Sarita's research interests have been on microbial biodegradation of natural materials, including retting of coconut husk, agave and natural waste, microbial transformation of phenolic compounds and the activity of various fungal enzymes and products.
She has also carried out work on mutagenesis, genetic transformations and karyotyping of a fungal isolate.
Most recently Sarita has pursued studies on alkalophilic, thermotolerant enzymes such as lipases, chitinases, proteases and amylases from microorganisms isolated from estuarine waters and salt pans. She is also interested in the mechanisms of metal sorption by highly halo-tolerant fungi from these marine waters.
Most Satisfying Achievements/Awards:
Sarita was recipient of a two-year Research Fellowship of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization – International Centre for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology [UNIDO– ICGEB] at ICGEB, Trieste , Italy .
She was the founding secretary of the local ( Goa ) unit of the Association of Microbiologists of India, and held that post a number of terms.
Sarita has served on several Religious bodies and their Executive Committees both at the local and national levels.
Family and Personal Interests/Activities:
Sarita lectures on Science & Ethics.
As a practicing Catholic, Sarita is very much involved in her Church activities; she enjoys visiting and comforting the elderly and lonely.
Sarita loves singing, ballroom dancing and listening to music. She prefers religious music; soft, melodious tunes, musicals and western classical music, - her favorite for the latter being Johann Strauss.
