Current Position and Title:
Ph.D. student in the Aquatic Biotechnology Project, Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Havana , Cuba

Professional Interests:
Yamila's Ph.D. thesis research targets growth control in aquatic organisms. She is also interested in the relationship between hormones that regulate growth and those that control immunity in fish and crustaceans, as well as the development of vaccines and immunostimulants for aquaculture.
Most Satisfying Achievements/Awards:
European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) World Programme fellowship in 2003, for training in zebrafish developmental biology, at the
Max Planck Institute
for Developmental Biology, Tuebingen , Germany.
Yamila is pleased to have been recognized twice for her research achievements by the Cuban Academy of Science (http://www.academiaciencias.cu/English/indexen.asp).
2006: for her contributions to work on a novel mechanism of RNA interference (RNAi) to demonstrate gene functions in aquatic organisms.
2007: for her contributions to work on neuropeptides that stimulate fish growth and the innate immune system.
Family and Personal Interests/Activities:
Yamila enjoys spending her free time with her family and friends.
